Abstract:
Alaska Senator Ernest Gruening interviews fisherman and Alaska State Legislator Bo Smith of Ketchikan about the state legislature and the transition to statehood. Smith discusses the Alaska Constitutional Convention, to which he had also served as delegate, and provides details about the organization and establishment of the new state government. Gruening and Smith discuss financial preparations made by territorial Alaska prior to statehood, federal grants that aided in the transition to statehood, and the new Alaska economy. Topics touched upon include taxes, oil-leasing revenues, the state population, teacher salaries, colonialism, the growing tourist industry, and development of a ferry system for coastal Southeast Alaska.
