Tony Gasbarro talks about the project starting in 1980 in cooperation with the United States Forest Service, funding by the Alaska Legislature, forest management practices to enhance forest lands to produce wood products, undertaking a project with Municipal Utility Services (MUS) to determine the technical and economic feasibility of using wood chips from a variety of sources as a source of energy, involving chipping 60 tons of wood, burning them in a 50/50 ratio with coal, test burns, determining economic feasibility, using any size wood, sources of chips, thinning encouraging growth, willow utilization, and economics of the study including harvesting and transportation. Allen Richmond talks about the mixture they will be using, two day study, mixing coal and wood chips, feeding the mixture into the feed chute, getting an idea about how the boiler works with the mixture, attempt to develop a different market for unmarketable wood material, forest thinning, removing small diameter trees, timber stand improvement costs, cost estimates, btu value of wood chips compared to coal, steps in their process, size of wood chips, btu analysis at the agriculture school, and the cooperative effort of those involved.
