Basil Hedrick talks about being appointed director of the international programs, not doing away with any of the pre-existing international programs, they are looking at strengthening the international ties institutionally with certain nations around the world particularly the Pacific Rim nations and in Scandinavia, he gave examples of countries they work with, in Scandinavia they hope to have scholarly exchange, they are looking at technical assistance contracting, the adventitious position of the University of Alaska Fairbanks to carry out work especially pertaining to sub-Arctic polar research and applied science, helping nations with certain matters pertaining to maritime nations, having the expertise and knowledge, exchange of students, Chancellor O'Rourke, increase in the international student body, increasing the engineering department, a trade center, how the university and state will benefit, markets for Alaskan products, cultural enrichment, cultural and economic benefits, tourism growth, and people to people relationships being created.
