Pamela Herman talks about the big step for rural Alaskans to attend college, 60 rural Alaskan high school students working to reduce the size of that step, a summer enrichment program, why Fairbanks is the location of the program, their program last summer, enrollment requirements in the Rural Alaska Honors Institute, standards, classes and curriculum, where the students are from, recruitment through the schools, staff, a seven week preview of college for college-bound junior high school students, experiencing college life and survival skills necessary to complete a college degree with an emphasis on the academic side of college life, the students learning the campus, support systems, social activities, student responsibilities, the team project emphasizing cooperation, follow up programs, students graduating from the program with honors are guaranteed admission to the University of Alaska Fairbanks before returning home, returning students, forming the program, and serving as the coordinator of the Rural Alaska Honors Institute.
