Chancellor Patrick O'Rourke talks about Chancellor Cutler having the most difficult task facing the institution in its recent history and that is breaking out the distinctiveness of the University of Alaska Fairbanks from its sister institutions and the system itself, establishment of its own management system, stabilizing and rebuilding of the enrollment during the pipeline downtime, addition of a number of new program elements, enrollment, the housing crunch causing many students to go elsewhere when they weren't assured of a place to live on campus, new programs, the first Master of Science program in petroleum engineering, the economics program, applied linguistics, the delivery of engineering science courses to the North Slope by videotape, improving the quality of their program in education, social and behavioral sciences, building their summer and evening programs, economic impact of university activities, international education, exchange programs and support for capital projects. Cedzo said UAF commemorated the first day of instruction at the University of Alaska (September 18, 1922) with a week-long celebration.
