Chancellor Patrick O'Rourke talks about his first year as Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, improvement on the governing process on campus, better linking between administration, faculty and students, the FY 84 budgetary proposal which went through a very thorough review process by the assembly and the ASCA prior to coming to the executive council, the importance of serving the students, improving the campus, better communication and a feeling that things are happening contributing to a defeat of a unionization of the faculty, improvement of the summer sessions and the Alaska Native Studies programs, a trimester at the university, a consolidation of Native programs into a single program thrust and a restructuring of the School of Education into the College of Rural and Human Development, identity of UAF becoming more defined, the difficult transition from the time that the UAF campus was the only University of Alaska to the standpoint where it is one of three universities, the acknowledgment that the three university campuses are somewhat different, have a different focus and have different qualities to their programs, competing on their own merit, and the engineering programs in Anchorage not negatively affecting the engineering programs at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
