Dean Harry Hilton talks about increased enrollment numbers at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, reasons for the expected influx this fall, in-state recruiting effort which has been improving yearly, and acceptance of high school teachers and counselors as far as the selection of programs offered at UAF and the quality of instruction. Sally Taylor, university chief recruiter, talks about a pronounced change in the reaction to UAF by Alaska students, high school counselors and parents, Alaskans no longer believing that they have to go to the lower forty-eight to get a quality education, increase in the percentage of students coming north, changes in the number of high school graduates coming to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, enrollment of Alaska Natives doubling in the last few years, and keeping in the state a larger percentage of the outstanding students. Hilton said there is a retention effort going back a few years, retaining the students and stopping the trend of smaller returning classes, and increased number of students returning to the residence halls.
