About the Collection

Over the past half century, the University of Alaska Fairbanks has built the largest collection of archival films in and about Alaska. The collection combines hundreds of donations of film and videos to UAF by individuals, organizations and institutions. Materials range from professional productions to amateur home-movies, made in and about Alaska from the earliest days of filmmaking through today. Since 1993 these materials have been held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library. Films and videos selected for this portal project are a sampling of the thousands available for checkout on DVD through the Rasmuson Library. Unless otherwise noted, items are presented here in their entirety, unedited and uncut. Short, popular clips from the collection can be viewed on our YouTube channel. : [Chuck Gray film collection further addition 6]; Footage features scenes of flying supplies in to establish a hunting camp in the Brooks Range. Airplanes include a Pilatus Porter, Cessna 170 (?) and Piper Super Cub. Additional footage includes moving supplies with an Argo off-road vehicle and a ground squirrel.

: [Baker family films]; The original film is labeled “Ma and pa golfing, cutting and bringing in Christmas tree, Ma and Tom and Queenie.” The film contains scenes of the Baker family golfing in Michigan, Queenie the dog pulling people on a sled, a small airplane flying low along a shoreline, two people cutting a Christmas tree that is then towed to the truck by Queenie, and blue jays at a bird feeder.

: [Boating on a river, camping]; This footage features three children in the front of a boat on a river, a boat passing a sternwheeler with tourists on the sternwheeler waving, a boat motoring to shore, a campsite with a teepee and campers, women preparing food at a campsite on the bank of a river, women roasting and eating hotdogs, a cliff face, sea gulls, and a cityscape viewed from across a body of water (likely not in Alaska).

: [Alaska Native celebrations]; This film contains scenes of different groups of Alaska Native peoples drumming and dancing in Southeast and Northern Alaska, people sharing and eating muktuk (whale) at a celebration in Northern Alaska, and a blanket toss in Northern Alaska (possibly Barrow).

: [AMOCO-Navarin operations]; The filmmaker's original labeling scheme has AAF-20,000 numbered as Bacon 102-1 and titled "AMOCO-Navarin Operations: WP [workprint]-400 feet." It contains footage of men boarding a Boeing 234 Chinook helicopter, the helicopter taking off and then landing at an oil rig or platform in the ocean, a sign that says "Ocean Odyssey," a man in a small control room, drilling operations and men at work aboard an oil rig, a satellite dish and control room, a man being interviewed, more scenes aboard the oil rig, a cargo ship and a sign reading "Maersk Serangoon," a man with binoculars, a pipe and cargo aboard a ship?, a helicopter landing at an airport, and men disembarking from the helicopter. Reed Bovee interviewed filmmaker Bill Bacon in 2010, and the following information about these films is based on Bovee's notes from that interview: "Box 102 - 1 Reel - Film Bill did for AMOCO Oil. They had a contract. Also, they had a lease for fifty miles off of Anwar [ANWR] on the border of Canada and the United States and they wanted a film of the whole operation."

: [Haul Road, Fairbanks, Sam and Judy Little, John and Joan Wild]; This footage features scenes of people dancing at a bar as a band is playing, Haul Road scenes, a crane removing pipeline sections from a semi trailer, black smoke from a fire, a trucker (named "Billy Goat" according to notes accompanying the film) in the cab of a truck, men working on a truck and changing a tire, pipeline construction scenes, trucking and truckers, downtown Fairbanks, Haul Road views, a record cover for singer Sam Little, Sam playing guitar, Sam and his family (the woman is identified as Judy in notes accompanying the film), the family's trailer home, the family going car shopping at Aurora Motors in Fairbanks, a woman (identified as Joan in notes accompanying the film) being interviewed, a woman and child, Sam and Judy being interviewed, views of their home's interior, kids playing, a woman and man (identified in notes as John and Joan Wild) being interviewed and working at a cabin, man in a canoe, and a woman at a cabin.

: [Truck on Haul Road]; Footage includes a semi-trailer transporting sections of the Trans-Alaska pipeline along the Haul Road, interior and exterior views of a truck and trailer, pipeline sections being loaded onto a trailer, a semi-trailer traveling on the Haul Road, trucks crossing a bridge, a crane stacking pipeline sections, workers putting pipeline sections on a trailer, and semi-trailers traveling on a road.

: [Pipeline footage]; Information noted on the original film is given here in parentheses. All segments are silent.
