About the Collection

Over the past half century, the University of Alaska Fairbanks has built the largest collection of archival films in and about Alaska. The collection combines hundreds of donations of film and videos to UAF by individuals, organizations and institutions. Materials range from professional productions to amateur home-movies, made in and about Alaska from the earliest days of filmmaking through today. Since 1993 these materials have been held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library. Films and videos selected for this portal project are a sampling of the thousands available for checkout on DVD through the Rasmuson Library. Unless otherwise noted, items are presented here in their entirety, unedited and uncut. Short, popular clips from the collection can be viewed on our YouTube channel. : [Golden Days, Valdez, log home construction, Dawson City 1]; AAF-10409 is made up of several smaller reels of film. Handwritten notes on original film boxes are as follows: “Turnagain arm, Homer Spit, first of Golden Days parade 1989, Bell’s.” “Bell’s, Golden Days Parade 2 1989.” “Bell’s, 1989, Golden Days 3.” “Bell’s, 1989, Smalley Creek Mine.” “Bell’s, 1989, Valdez, Matanuska Glacier.” “Bell’s, 1989, Valdez.” This film contains footage of scenic travels, a large halibut, glacier views, a 1989 Fairbanks parade, Golden Days celebration scenes and parade, a man with a small sluicebox, gold flecks in a pan, calving glaciers, icebergs and seals, an eagle's nest, a waterfall, a dredge, a tour boat, sea otters, glaciers, and icebergs.

: North Slope: Brower interview #4 [# 2]; This footage features an interview with Eugene Brower, mayor of the North Slope Borough.

: [Reindeer, Barrow, seal hunt, Nome]; This is a compilation of Eskimo activities from several Van Valin films, and it contains some brief scenes that are not present on other films in the series. Footage includes reindeer herding as well as life and activities in Nome. Summary: Footage includes a reindeer round-up, herders examining ear tags, reindeer being butchered, a man's hair being cut (koocheeruk) with a stone knife and wooden board, mail arriving from Kotzebue, snow house construction, dance movements, people going to church during Easter in Barrow, traditional sod houses during winter and summer, a skin tent, a King Eider duck, a man in a kayak, a village dance, boats with sails, seal hunting (patkotak), hauling a seal across an ice pack and pressure ridges, sled dogs hauling a bearded seal up on beach, Eskimos skinning a bearded seal (oogruk), seals being butchered and meat being transported by dog sled, a sled dog eating a dead dog, a midnight sun sequence, supplies hauled in an umiak, a blanket toss, a whaling festival and celebration (nalukutuq). Footage in Nome includes lightering people to shore, beach mining, racing dogs in Nome, Sinuk River, towing an umiak, salmon fishing, pipe smoke, drying salmon, and a kayak frame.

: [Alaska 1925, Kenai River, Skilak Lake, bear hunt]; This film is labeled “Alaska 1925,” “Alaska 25 - Kenai R. - Skilak Lake – Hunt,” and “Alaska Hunting II.” The film contains scenes of three men in a motor boat towing another boat, men rowing an open boat down a swift river, scenes from within the open boat as a man rows, faces of men in a boat, scenery along the shoreline, men standing by a log cabin, men hiking with packs, a porcupine running into the bushes, men setting up a canvas tent, men joking around in camp, men crossing a small stream, a man playing a flute, a hillside and inlet, and a man skinning a dead bear.

: [Alaska 1926 odds and ends, glaciers and boats]; This film is labeled “Alaska 1926” and “Alaska 26 Odds and Ends #4.” The film contains miscellaneous scenes of glaciers, a man with a rifle aboard a boat, a coastal community waterfront, activities aboard a ship, men climbing a snowy mountain, icy waters and glaciers, and various boats.

: [Wilkins expeditions, wonders in motion etc. 5]; This footage includes cutting hay with a team of horses, Charlie Creamer (?) in a field with shocks of hay, a large commercial garden and greenhouses, a picnic and political rally, a sluice box operating, a truck pulling Hubert Wilkins' Fokker fuselage through Fairbanks, a crashed Fokker with a broken wing, the wing being removed by men, a crashed Fokker with collapsed landing gear during winter, and snow-motors clearing a runway.

: [Glaciers, Wonder Lake, Merrill and airplane]; This film contains images of men sorting supplies for a field expedition (likely including Roscoe Bonsal, Ben Wood, Percy Pond, Andrew M. “Andy” Taylor, and Paul Kegal), a man unloading supplies from a small boat onto shore, men with packs hiking across an uneven glacier surface, a rock slide in the distance, canvas tents on a glacier, men hiking and posing for the camera, men hiking alongside crevasses, men roped together while hiking, men looking out across an icefield, snow covered mountain peaks, a glacier calving into water, mountain peaks as viewed from a boat, men on a boat, men posing with mountain goats they’ve hunted, a boat moving through icy waters, men with animal hides on a dock, a man (possibly skipper Paul Kegal) repairing the boat M/V Eurus, Paula and John Anderson’s fox farm and roadhouse (Polly’s roadhouse) at the north end of Wonder Lake in what is today Denali National Park, dogs pulling a sled in summer with one man driving and another riding in the sled, men at a cabin near the lake, a man and woman (possibly Paula and John Anderson) at a cabin, dogs, railroad tracks as viewed from a moving train, a train going through a tunnel, a south or southeastern coastal Alaska town, the Anchorage No. 1 Travel Air biplane taking off and climbing steeply, men in a rowboat towing the Anchorage No. 1 on floats, pilot Russel Merrill fueling an airplane, a man cranking and hand propping the Anchorage No. 1 airplane, aerial views of landscapes and shorelines from an airplane, a totem pole, Ketchikan, the Ketchikan Spruce Mill, a fish trap tender boat named the "Eureka of Seattle" with a fish scow alongside it named "APEX No. 3" (or possibly No. 8 or No. 9). The poles sticking out of the water are part of a fish trap known as a standing trap or pile trap. Identifications were made by comparing the film to photos in “With a Camera in My Hands: William O. Field, Pioneer Glaciologist: a Life History as Told to C. Suzanne Brown,” edited by C. Suzanne Brown and published by University of Alaska Press, 2004. According to Ketchikan author and retired Alaska Marine Highway System Captain William M. Hopkins in 2016, the end of the film contains views of Ketchikan, including the old Spruce Mill at the mouth of Ketchikan Creek. The waterway scenes are of the Eastern Channel of the southern end of Tongass Narrows between Mountain Point and the Coast Guard base and the Spruce Mill. If the entire clip was filmed in the same general area, the fish trap is possibly located somewhere along the southern Tongass Narrows or along nearby Annette Island.

: [Wilkins expeditions, wonders in motion etc. 3]; This footage features mining clean-up and a sluice box in operation, stacking tailings using a bucket, Stinson biplanes, Harding Lake recreation, Wilkins snow-motors seen from the air in 1926, grayling fishing, the paddlewheeler "Pioneer", dog races, and musher Joe Stickman being presented with a trophy (Endicott trophy?).

: [Alaska traveling I circa 1926, railroad, ships, coastal communities]; This film is labeled “Alaska 1925,” “Alaska 1925 - I think – travelling,” and “Alaska 1926 I.” The footage contains scenes of people traveling in an open train car, a conductor talking to people aboard a train, railroad travel, travel by ship, coastal communities, military ships in a harbor (possibly Seattle), automobiles and people in a town with a mountainous backdrop, a totem pole, a town with muddy streets, a sign for a Valdez dock, a ship at a dock, a boy with a fish, men unloading boxes on a dock, an Emel Packing Company sign, a cannery, an Alaska Steamship Company sign on a vessel, further scenes of shipboard and dock activities in Valdez, and ship passengers enjoying the scenery.

: [Alaska traveling II circa 1926, Fairbanks and Cordova]; This film is labeled, “Alaska 1925 or 1927” and “Alaska Travelling II 1926.” Footage contains scenes of people aboard a large ship, the S.S. Alaska, viewing a glacier. It also features a train crossing a tall railroad trestle and winding through mountainous terrain, the train going under a trestle and through a tunnel, scenes of the railroad bridge in Nenana, First Avenue in Fairbanks, the sternwheeler Alice and another vessel, the Cowles Street library building and a nearby home in downtown Fairbanks, men and women at the University of Alaska farm in Fairbanks, a child with a haltered cow, a goat, other livestock, a man panning for gold, mining activities including a sluice box and windlass, men and women pushing an automobile, people on a street (likely in Fairbanks), a train in Cordova, men unloading sacks onto a dock, and people aboard a ship viewing the surrounding water and mountains.

: Alaska Wonders In Motion No. 3; Images include the title screen "Educational Films Corporation America Presents Alaska Wonders In Motion No. 3 Produced by Al.I.Smith." This film's scenes feature early Anchorage, Alaska Railroad construction, Childs Glacier calving, and men hunting Kodiak bears. It also includes scenes of Anchorage streets and log structures, the Alaska Labor Union building, a laundry tent, Fourth of July celebrations featuring an eating contest, a baseball game, and Anchorage area bungalows.

: Wonders in Motion; This footage features buildings in Anchorage, the wooden trestle at Eagle River, track laying crews, and other construction activities. Childs Glacier near Cordova is also shown.

: [Chatanika, narrow-gauge, Gilmore]; AAF-784 images include F.E. gold camp at unidentified location, Jess Bryant with glasses, hat and cigar, Joseph Romig in dark suit with cigar, Davidson Ditch, Chatanika River, Chatanika siphon, Ella Romig next to pipe, hydraulic giants, Dredge Number 6 under construction at Gilmore, Alaska Railroad narrow-gauge train on original track from the Tanana Valley Railroad at Chatanika, unidentified people, and completed dredge at work.

: Through Alaska with A.A. Humfrey and Red Can- part 1; This film has title screens and shows highlights from a five-month tour of Alaska. It includes footage of Juneau, the Hills Brothers Coffee shop, Territorial Governor George Parks, Dr. W. W. Council, the Mendenhall Glacier, Lynn Canal and Skagway, Chilkoot Barracks Army Post, White Pass and Yukon Railway travel, Whitehorse, the White Pass Hotel, the steamship "Yukon," Larry Higgins at Miles Canyon, Whitehorse Rapids on the Yukon River, the steamship "Keno" pushing a barge, the sternwheeler "Casca," passage through Five Fingers Rapids, loading of cord wood or firewood onto a steamship, travel downriver with brief stops for wooding up and at Dawson City, and the towns of Eagle, Circle, Fort Yukon, Rampart, and St. Michael. Travel continues across the Bering Sea to Unalakleet and Nome with several views of the town. Footage in Nome includes Noel Wien fueling and hand-propping the Hisso Standard J1 biplane "Fairbanks.” This is followed by travel from Nome to Seattle on the steamer "Victoria” with a stop at Akutan whaling station in the Aleutian Islands. Travel resumes from Seattle to Ketchikan with several views of the fishing town. Enroute to Wrangell, the ship passes a tug towing a salvaged ship. There are views of Wrangell. Travel continues to Juneau, Skagway, Sitka , through the Gulf of Alaska in bad weather with high seas, then on to Cordova. From Cordova, travel continues on the Copper River and Northwestern Railway with scenes of the two million dollar bridge, Miles and Childs Glaciers, Abercrombie Rapids on the Copper River, Koskulina [Kotsina?] Canyon bridge, Chitina River, Railroad Superintendent Fred A. Hansen, purchasing agent W. B. Sprague, the town of Chitina, Long Lake, a farm near McCarthy, Kennecott Mine, Valdez, Seward, Seldovia, the steamer "Admiral Evans," Captain Gilje, pilot Obert, purser "Jiggs" Rowland, Alitak Cannery on Kodiak Island, Kodiak, Seward Railroad Depot, Kenai Lake, the loop section and tunnels on the railway, Spencer Glacier, Turnagain Arm, and Cook Inlet. Views of Anchorage include buildings and streets, customer A.A. Shonbeck, and Alaska Railroad employees Joe Elmes and Tod Cunningham. Travel continues from Fairbanks on the Alaska Railroad using a "speeder.” Travel continues from Juneau on the launch "Ventura" with a final brief view of Sitka.

: Through Alaska with A.A. Humfrey and Red Can- part 2; This film has title screens and shows highlights from a five-month tour of Alaska. : [Alaska 1931 reel 4, glaciers and ships]; This film is labeled “Alaska 1931 Reel 4.” The film contains scenic shots of glaciers and mountains, a small boat moving in front of a glacier face, a calving glacier, icebergs, a small boat moving through icy waters, ice near a shoreline, a larger steamship moving through icy waters near a glacier face, and seals resting on icebergs in the distance.

: [Alaska 1931]; This film is labeled “Alaska 1931” and “Scenes taken for footage for Milford - Alaska 1931.” The footage contains scenic shots of various snowy mountains, glaciers, a small boat in icy waters, a man aboard a boat cranking a film camera, icy waters, a man with a camera, and more glaciers and snowy mountains.

: [Alaska glaciers 1931 reel 3]; This film is labeled “Alaska 1931 Reel 3.” The footage contains scenes of glaciers calving into water, scenic shots of glaciers, a panoramic shot across the face of a glacier, snowy mountains, and ice fields.

: Glacier priest; This is a series of highly dramatized reenactments from the life of Father Bernard Hubbard, a scientist and missionary. Occasionally, the reenactments don't jibe with the story. Scenes dramatized include: climbing the Taku Glacier, traveling by dogsled to the village of Holy Cross to combat an influenza epidemic (the musher is shown wearing short, Sami-style boots and three nuns are shown in their fur-hooded cloaks), Father Hubbard's run to an unnamed village when he was sick with the flu himself, Father Hubbard's ascent of Aniakchak Volcano (men dig through a layer of ash to find clean snow), exploring the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes (men cross rocky terrain with a wheeled dog sled, men in a forest of dead trees, men and a dog wear gas masks as they approach the volcano), his work among the King Island Eskimos (many shots of King Islanders including a Wolf? dance), and his promotion of Alaska as a place to settle in (children play on an old-fashioned merry-go-round, a man digs up large potatoes, and agriculture scenes which may have been shot in Matanuska Valley).

: [Alaska 1931 or 1935, Copper River Railroad, Harriman Fiord, Inside Passage, Juneau]; This film is labeled “Alaska 1931 or 1935” and “Copper River RR, Harriman Fiord, Inside Passage.” The film contains scenes of a boat moving through icy waters, an airplane on floats in water, a train crossing a bridge over Copper River and moving alongside the river, four men maneuvering an automobile outfitted for travel on railroad tracks, a car running along train tracks, a man walking on a rocky hillside and chopping at earth to make steps, glacier scenes, snowy mountains, men in a rowboat, men examining ice, a man operating a film camera, icy waters, travel alongside steep mountains rising out of an inlet, men in a boat, the Juneau waterfront, A.J. Mine, and downtown Juneau.

: [Alaska '35]; This film contains footage of Alaska Railroad cars, horses pulling a wagon on a bridge, mountains and glaciers, mountain goats on a hillside, men with a boat on a beach, a street and buildings in Seward, a steam engine and train arriving at Palmer or Matanuska Junction, Matanuska Valley Colony and colonists, farm buildings and farm workers, a hog with piglets, men with pitchforks scooping hay, people in a truck moving furniture, a man and child at a water pump, a hay wagon, barns and silos, people building frame houses, a blacksmith or machinist at work, men moving building supplies with trucks and bulldozers, a family posing next to a finished house, workers and machinery threshing grain or chopping hay, a farmstead with a log home, a Caterpillar crossing railroad tracks, men unloading bags from a truck, people offloading supplies from a train, a bulldozer pulling a load of construction material, several Caterpillars clearing land and grading soil, a train and steam engine, trucks near tents, people with horses, a blacksmith, children in a wagon, the trading post and cooperative store, a family and home, a girl on a ladder, workers finishing house construction, people moving items into a house, a man chopping a tree, a man and boy at a water pump, men pitching hay, a frame home, a log home, a barn and silo, a horse and wagon, a threshing machine, a farm in the distance, and a car on the road.

: [Alaska 1935, Blackstone Bay, College Fiord, odds and ends]; This film is labeled “Alaska 1935” and “Blackstone Bay, College Fiord, Odds and Ends, Goats etc., Fish.” The film contains scenes of two men rowing a boat and anchoring it near a waterfall, a man holding a film camera, a man watching salmon swim upstream, numerous salmon in a shallow stream, two men paddling a boat in the distance as seen from a rock opening, a herd of mountain goats on a hillside near a shoreline, a calving glacier and icy waters, and birds flying near a waterfall.

: [Adler-Tollefson Family films - 2]; This is the 1936 Winter Carnival in Fairbanks.

: [Adler-Tollefson Family films - 1]; This film features Joanie Adler’s birthday with eight candles on the cake, Joe Crosson Jr. or Don Crosson at the party, Joanie Adler playing croquet with parents, Joanie Adler skiing with her parents and other children, Chena River break-up near the Cushman Street Bridge in Fairbanks, Chena River break-up with cars and trucks on streets (including Illinois Street), an overview of flooding as seen from a rooftop, coal bunkers in the background, Fairbanks Winter Carnival queen contestants, and an ice throne. Notes on the original film say “Terry Gordon, Baby ‘36, Xmas, Snow, Cabin, Flood, Carnival, Break-up ‘36, and Carnival ‘36.”

: [Arnie M. Lee and Family collection - 9]; This video is composed of footage from four film reels. AAF-16334 is from a film likely shot by Lee family friend Fred Torsak. It is labeled “1936?, Weeks Field airplanes, Cushman Street Bridge, Dad, dog team, polar bear.” (a post office date stamp on the film box says July 26, 1937). The film contains footage of airplanes at Weeks Field in Fairbanks, a Pacific Alaska Airways hangar, Cushman Street in Fairbanks, the Samson’s hardware store building, Cushman Street bridge over the Chena River, a polar bear in a cage, and people riding in a dog sled. AAF-16335 is from a film likely shot by Lee family friend Fred Torsak. It is labeled, “Fairbanks Alaska, Gold Dredge mining.” (The post office date stamp on the film box is April 2, 1938). The film contains footage of a large placer mining site, hydraulic giants at work, a man with a camera filming the mining operations, an overburden being blasted or falling in large chunks, a mining camp, a man walking along the pipeline (Davidson ditch or siphon?), a dredge at work, and tailings piles. AAF-16336 is from a film likely shot by Lee family friend Fred Torsak. It is labeled “Gold mining with great cleanup gold.” (The post office date stamp on the film box is February 13, 1939). The film contains color footage of hydraulic giants and a bulldozer at work, a man in a large sluice box, a man holding a large pan full of gold, people working a smaller sluice box, and Main School in Fairbanks. AAF-16337 is from a film likely shot by Lee family friend Fred Torsak. It is labeled “Weeks Field, dog team, Main School.” (The post office date stamp on the film box is also February 13, 1939). The film contains color footage of a dog team next to an airplane, a woman taking photos of a dog team, an airplane flying overhead, Main school in Fairbanks, and the wooden Fairbanks Airplane Corporation hangar on Rickert's field situated across from Weeks Field on Cushman Street in Fairbanks.

: Wheels from the Arctic; Original film taken by John Logan of travel with Slim Williams from Fairbanks to Washington State overland in 1939 on BSA motorcycles. The two men were promoting the idea of a highway connecting Alaska to the Lower 48 states. Footage includes their departure from Fairbanks, Tanana River travel, visiting the RCMP in Dawson City Yukon Territory, difficulties encountered along the trail, constructing a boat to cross the Klappan River, travel with the horse pack train of Alfred and Elma Milotte, arrival at the Canada - U.S. Border, and travel in Washington state.

: [Bristol Bay sailing fleet, Dickson crash and Woodley airways, Dickson family in Anchorage, Stinson tri-motor and Star Airlines]; Summary: Part 1 (AAF-1158) footage includes Palmer buildings, the Tusk in Merrill Pass, stone marten furs, loading meat in Woodley floatplane near Nome, a sunset, spawning salmon, an aerial view of a river, an unidentified town, sport fishermen with mosquito nets, Bristol Bay sailing fleet fishing for salmon, pulling nets, a cannery, Star Airlines Bellanca on floats, a sailing fleet under sail, a cormorant nest, an airplane shadow with a circular rainbow, a fishing fleet, unloading fish at a cannery, and cannery activity. Part 2 (AAF-1159) includes Star Airlines Bellanca airplane on floats at Lake Spenard, Dickson Airways Waco biplane nosed over in ice on Prince William Sound island, Bud Seltenreich and Art Woodley with Coast Guard rescuers, Art Woodley drinking coffee, the Coast Guard cutter Haida, Woodley airplane and Dickson Waco, Bud Seltenreich and Roy Dickson under a rock outcropping used for shelter, mountains and steaming inactive volcanoes, Aiachak crater and Katmai crater. Additional footage features magma in St. Augustine volcano following the March 26 1931 eruption, Mt Redoubt, Woodley Travelair suspended from an Alaska Railroad crane during the conversion to floats, Mt.
